Contributing to Addressing Climate Change through Products and Services

Policy

The Sanwa Group contributes to the realization of an enriched, sustainable society by promoting mitigation and adaptation that reduces or prevents the effects of climate change through business activities.

Sales Progress of Products Contributing to Addressing Climate Change (consolidated)

Worldwide, the Sanwa Group supplies a wide array of products that address climate change using two separate approaches: mitigation by reducing emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases; and adaption by responding to the various phenomena brought about by climate change.
In our Long-Term Vision and Mid-Term Management Plan announced in May 2022, we set a new target for the net sales of products contributing to mitigation/adaptation to climate change for FY 2024. With this goal in mind, we will accelerate product development and sales growth in response to social issues and needs, aiming for sustainable growth by helping to resolve climate change issues and improving our profitability.

Waterproof Products

In recent years, natural disasters due to climate change and abnormal weather have been increasing, and catastrophic floods caused by large typhoons and sudden, record-setting downpours have been more frequent. As an adaptation strategy to such changes and a measure to prevent urban flood damage, our waterproofing products contribute to the safety of cities by protecting entrances to buildings and underground shopping malls from flooding.
Demand for this product range is expected to see significant growth in the coming years due to the ability to save lives and property from floods in a world in where global warming is intensifying.

Development History of "Water Guard" Waterproof Shutter

Sanwa Shutter Corporation's Water Guard Waterproof Shutter, launched throughout Japan in October 2014, is an electric panel shutter that resists flooding up to 2.5 meters in height. It can also serve as a shutter for security purposes for daily use. When the threat of flooding is detected, the shutter is made watertight by sealing the shutter closed and pressing the compression button to put the compression structure into operation.

The impetus for development was the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture incurred extensive damage from the tsunami, but the wastewater treatment plant building at Sendai Shiogama Port remained unscathed because steel doors had been installed in the engine room. After receiving this information, Sanwa Shutter Corporation puts its efforts into developing waterproofing products, and went to work on development of waterproof doors and waterproof shutters. In the development stage, the development of rubber that could withstand the water pressure and suppress leakage took time, but Sanwa Shutter Corporation was able to develop the industry's first waterproof shutter in less than a year.

  • "Water Guard"

High Wind Resistance Products

Disaster risks, such as wind damage, are predicted to go up as climate change increases, and in recent years massive typhoons have occurred almost every year.
Due to increased awareness of the importance of disaster prevention/mitigation and national disaster resilience, advanced wind-resistance that factors in unprecedented large-scale disasters are more frequently being required for openings at commercial buildings, factories, distribution centers, and homes.

Wind-Resistant Guards Series (Sanwa Shutter Corporation)

High-strength shutter with wind-resistant guards
High-strength shutter with wind-resistant guards (Sanwa Shutter Corporation)
"High-strength shutter and wind-resistant guards"
(Sanwa Shutter Corporation)

A high-strength shutter optimally suited for large openings in commercial buildings, factories, airports, etc., where even more advanced wind pressure-resistance is required, or for openings in coastal areas, truck berths for large logistics warehouses, and upper floors. High-strength wind-resistant hooks and integral steel wind-resistant guiderails are standard.

Integral steel guiderails
Integral steel guiderails

Beginning with guide rails that were previously welded and assembled, we have developed an integral-shaped steel guide rail. Assembly without welding has improved productivity in plants and ensured more consistent quality.
Also, by reducing the weight of guide rails by approximately 30% to 50%, we have lowered the environmental burden.

"Mado More" wind-resistant guards
Madomore wind-resistant guards (Sanwa Shutter Corporation)
"Madomore wind-resistant guards"
(Sanwa Shutter Corporation)

A high wind pressure-resistant window shutter that protects window glass from flying objects caused by strong winds such as typhoons.
By ensuring maximum wind pressure resistance (negative pressure) of 2,400 Pa —three times more than conventional products— "Mado More" guards can be used not only in detached houses but also in mid-rise apartments of about 45 m/s (equivalent to 14 or 15 floors). In addition, fireproofing means it can be used for openings that require fireproof equipment to be installed due to the risk of a fire spreading. It also works as an effective way to prevent condensation on aluminum sashes.

ODC products with high wind resistance

In the US, where typhoons (hurricanes) are as common as in Japan, windows in buildings are protected with security film and wind-resistant garage doors are installed to prepare for the threat of roofs and houses collapsing due to strong winds entering through the openings. ODC is reducing the risk of disaster at openings with garage doors and wind-resistant window products that have obtained building standard certification in Florida, a hurricane-prone area.
